Mr Sonic Boom in Montgomery
Mr Sonic Boom returns in the Billy Montgomery Stakes.
January 20, 2012
The Lance Moore-owned and trained Mr Sonic Boom, who scored five-straight wins last year, makes his 14th career start in his sophomore debut when he heads a full field of 3-year-old Louisiana-breds in the $40,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes (RG3) on Saturday at Louisiana Downs.
Also on the card, the Henry Padgett-owned and -trained Slinkys Fortune tries for his third stakes win in his latest four races when he starts in the $20,000 Marathon Stakes over 870 yards.
Mr Sonic Boom (Easy Winning Jet-Ms Baseline by Vital Sign) scored each of his five wins last year in a five-race span from August to early November. The homebred gelding defeated open horses in the $133,000 Gillespie County Fair Futurity (G3) and handled state-breds in the $277,000 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) during his winning streak.
In the Gillespie County Fair Futurity on August 28, Mr Sonic Boom showed his domination by pulling away to an easy win by 1 3/4 lengths in :17.394 for 350 yards.
Then, two starts later, Mr Sonic Boom was back in Louisiana and showed his gameness while battling to a head win over Coors Select in the LQHBA Sale Futurity, with a :17.358 time. Coors Select went on to win the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile (RG2) at Fair Grounds, while Mr Sonic Boom finished sixth after drifting out.
Mac Sumpter and Christopher Gautreaux’s Mossy Oak Tree (Oak Tree Special-All Eyes On Madison by Mr Eye Opener) could be rounding into winning form after a promising second-place finish in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile, his latest race. The Kevin Broussard-trained gelding was second to Coors Select in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile while finishing ahead of Mr Sonic Boom.
Ebelyn Rojas’ Oak Tree Corona (Oak Tree Special-First Down Corona by First Down Dash) has raced to top-two finishes in five of his six outs for trainer Fructuoso Huitron and comes off a close runner-up effort in the LQHBA Invitational (R). Oak Tree Corona was in contention for the entire 400 yards before coming up a neck short at the finish.
In the Marathon, Slinkys Fortune (Dashs Slinky-Chasing A Fortune by Six Fortunes) has wins in the 870-yard Au Revior Stakes, which was run over the turf, and the 870-yard Faubourg St John Stakes from his latest three starts. The 8-year-old gelding made a five-wide move in the Au Revior and drew out to win by 2 lengths at Evangeline Downs on December 16.
Slinkys Fortune has been on the board in 22 of 24 starts with 10 wins, and much of his success has come at Louisiana Downs. He has made eight local starts and come through with four wins, two seconds and a third. He was a game second in last year’s Marathon.
The Anthony Arey-owned and -trained Dr Drip (First To Shine-High Seas Operator by Streakin La Jolla) had a front-running victory over Slinkys Fortune two starts ago in an allowance race and then could not hold off Slinkys Fortune in the Au Revoir. He opened up a 5-length lead in the Au Revoir before setting for second behind Slinkys Fortune.
