Longshots Rule John Alleman Memorial

Veteran gelding Zupers Quick Dash picks up another stakes victory.

April 28, 2013

Saturday’s $50,000 John Alleman Memorial Stakes (RG3) for Louisiana-breds at Delta Downs proved to be a challenge for handicappers as the first four horses across the wire went off at double-digit odds. Leading the charge was 13-1 longshot Zupers Quick Dash, who scored by a half-length over 27-1 longshot Martini Mountain with another length back to 62-1 longshot Blue Louisiana Jolla.

Ridden by David Alvarez and trained by Bobby Martinez for owner Ponderosa Ranch of P C Inc., Zupers Quick Dash sprinted 350 yards in :17.274 over a good track under rainy conditions. The 7-year-old gelding by Heza Fast Dash, who was bred by Mark Langford out of the Zuppardo’s Prince (TB) mare Oh Shez Zuper, was making his fourth consecutive start in the John Alleman Memorial. The Louisiana-bred finished second in the 2010 edition, won the 2011 renewal and crossed the wire fifth last year. All told, Zupers Quick Dash has won 10 of 27 career starts with seven stakes wins and $375,129 in earnings.

James Mitchell’s homebred Martini Mountain, who scored a 47-1 upset in last year’s Louisiana Champions Day Classic (RG2) over a field that included Zupers Quick Dash, went over the $400,000 mark in career earnings with his runner-up effort. Blue Louisiana Jolla, the third-place finisher in the Louisiana Champions Day Classic behind Martini Mountain, also took third in this event. Favored Political Option was bumped and squeezed at the start and finished sixth.
