Klassic Strawfly Captures Jimmy Drake Stakes

Gelding picks up first stakes victory in 43rd lifetime outing.

June 10, 2012

Ron Stephens’ homebred Klassic Strawfly became a stakes winner in his 43rd career start as he prevailed by a half-length in Sunday’s $75,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park. Sent off as the 7-2 second choice in the wagering, Klassic Strawfly and jockey Macario Rodriguez traveled 400 yards in :19.215 to earn a 98 speed index with a 21 mph tailwind.

Stephens, who also trains Klassic Strawfly, bred the 6-year-old Genuine Strawfly gelding out of the A Classic Dash mare A Classic Song. Although this marked the first stakes win for Klassic Strawfly, the sorrel has successfully competed against allowance and high-priced claiming foes, both on the straightaway and around the turn at 870 yards. His career record now stands at 43-7-7-4 with a bankroll of $227,646.

K.H. Logax Inc.’s Snow Regard, a two-time stakes winner by Chicks Regard, finished a game second. Miracle Snow, an 8-year-old gelding by Dean Miracle running for breeders Mary and Melvin Neugebauer, finished third and improved his impressive record to 44-11-10-9 with earnings of more than $420,000.
