September 15, 2012

Samuel Valeriano’s Jess Lips, a two-time Grade 1-placed runner, set the fastest qualifying time on Friday night at Lone Star Park in the trials for the $174,000 Dash For Cash Derby (G2). Six trials were held on opening night of the American Quarter Horse meet at the Texas track.

Trained by Eddie Willis and ridden by Jimmy Brooks, the Texas-bred son of Mr Jess Perry scored by 1 ½ lengths and stopped the timer at :21.215 for 440 yards. This victory improved Jess Lips’ record to 12-3-6-1 with earnings of $328,252. The colt, who was bred by Charlie and Dixie Patterson, finished third behind champion Ochoa in this year’s Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs and second in last year’s Golden State Million Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos.

Among those who will join Jess Lips in the September 29 final are second-fastest qualifier Lethal Volt, a Volcom gelding who qualified to the All American Futurity (G1) and took second in the Southwest Juvenile Championship (G1) last season for owners Don Adams, P. K. Thomas and Gene White.
