May 5, 2013

George and Judy Weldon’s Jess A Traffic Jam earned his first career stakes win on Sunday as the 7-year-old Feature Mr Jess gelding closed late to capture the $35,000 Marathon Stakes at SunRay Park in Farmington, New Mexico. Piloted by Dusty Shepherd for trainer Blake Rust, the Oklahoma-bred prevailed by a neck at odds of 7-1 and got the 870-yard distance in :46.197.

Jess A Traffic Jam, who was bred by the Don R. Hill Estate, had been away from the races for nearly 19 months before returning to action with a second-place finish in a trial to the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge (G3) in March. The gelding finished third in the final, and his victory in the Marathon at SunRay marked his first win since August 2011 at Les Bois Park. Jess A Traffic Jam now has a career record of 26-6-4-6 with earnings of $80,970.

Runners owned by Hugo Barron Sierra completed the trifecta as Oh Jess Fly, a gelding by Fly Jess Fly who entered with a three-race winning streak from Sunland Park, had the lead in the stretch and held on for second. Favored Docs Apollo, winner of the Grade 1 Golden State Derby going 400 yards at Los Alamitos in 2011, took third.

Im Royal Quick was declared a non-starter due to a gate malfunction.
