'Mojito' Ready at Canterbury

Feature Mr Jess filly Huckleberry Mojito headlines Canterbury Park Derby.

July 5, 2012

The developing Huckleberry Mojito scored her second career win when she dominated her Canterbury Derby trial and tries to take a successful step to the stakes ranks when she starts as the fastest qualifier to the $40,650 Canterbury Park Derby on Saturday at the Minnesota track.

Owned by LMR 2011, Huckleberry Mojito (Feature Mr Jess-Eye Opening Special by Mr Eye Opener) has stepped up for trainer Ed Hardy in her Canterbury Derby trial to dominate by 3 1/4 lengths in :19.971, easily the fastest-qualifying time from the two trials.

Huckleberry Mojito finished first in her previous start, a Remington Park allowance race, but was disqualified and placed sixth for interference.

Hardy should be a potent force in the Canterbury Derby. He also has third-fastest qualifier Feature Dreamgirl (Feature Mr Jess-Allamericandreamgirl by Strawfly Special), seventh-fastest qualifier Pita Chick (Wave Carver-Royal Delphias Chick by Chicks Beduino) and 10th-fastest qualifier BP Phoenix Reign (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Dashing Mariah by First Down Dash).

Tom Maher’s Painted Lies (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Teller Lies by First Down Dash) won the other Canterbury Derby trial by a neck for his fourth-straight win for trainer Amber Blair. He was timed in :20.334 for the second-fastest qualifying mark. During his winning streak he won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders/NCQHRA Derby (R) by a half length as the 1-2 favorite. He was the third-place finisher in the Northlands Futurity (G3) last year.
