Significant Cartel has significant task in Anaheim Handicap.

Vinewood Farms’ Significant Cartel faces a contentious field when he tries to keep his current hot streak going in the $16,000 Anaheim Handicap for 4-year-olds on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.

Trained by Juan Aleman, Significant Cartel (Corona Cartel-Dash Master Miss by Dash For Destiny) has proved that he thrives at this level after a third-place finish in the $238,250 Golden State Derby (G1) in August and sixth-place run in the $935,350 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) in November. The gelding was second to the classy Senor Toby in the A Ransom Handicap and then on January 15 stepped forward to take the Cypress Handicap by a half length in :17.525 for the 350 yards.

Aleman also saddles Vinewood Farms and Santos Montemayor’s TR Eddie (TR Dasher-Corona Clique by Corona Cartel), who scored his most lucrative win nearly a year ago when he won the $138,250 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. He qualified for the Los Alamitos Super Derby and was fourth behind Significant Cartel in the Cypress for Aleman.

Michael Pohl’s homebred First Black Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-First Black Rose by Heza Fast Man) looks to regain his winning ways after winning four-straight races before a fourth-place finish in the $171,750 Southern California Derby (G1) as the favorite. The highlight of his winning streak was a game nose decision in a division of the John Deere Stakes for trainer Paul Jones.
