Winning his second consecutive Restricted Grade 1 event, Melvin Neugebauer’s Here Kittykittykitty prevailed by a neck in Saturday’s $85,320 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap at Sunland Park. The 6-year-old Genuine Strawfly gelding, who won the $170,480 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Cup Championship at Zia Park last time out, stopped the timer at :19.830 for 400 yards against a 16 mph headwind. Larry Gamez rode the 5-2 favorite for trainer Wes Giles.
Here Kittykittykitty, who was bred by Jay and Mary Lou Standefer, is now a winner of nine of 24 starts with earnings of $613,824. The gelding also won the Jess Burner in 2011 and has a total of six stakes victories.
Currie Maben’s homebred Jess Rueben James, a Jesse James Jr gelding with two Restricted Grade 2 stakes wins this year, finished a game second. The Ketel Won gelding An Absolut Diamond took third for owners Sandy Farris, Marc Jungers and Lisa McMinn.
