Moonshine Racing’s Gallant Mystic races for the largest purse of his career when he heads the $75,000 Zoetis Starter Allowance Challenge Championship, a race for horses who have started for a $5,000-claiming tag or less.

These are the best of the blue-collar horses who compete in the majority of races throughout American Quarter Horse racing: the claiming races in which the horses may be purchased for the claiming price.

Gallant Mystic (Separatist-The Creole Queen by First Down Dash) is in sharp form after winning the Zoetis Los Alamitos Starter Allowance Challenge and then stepping up to the stakes division to finish second in the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap, a race for horses that have competed in the Intermountain region, Northwest and Canada.

In the Zoetis Los Alamitos Starter Allowance Challenge, the Cody Joiner-trained Gallant Mystic was bumped at the start and then rallied to get the half-length win. He was also bumped in the Schvaneveldt and was able to manage his second-place finish behind PF Flyair.

Ocean Runner, Whos On First AJ, Runaway Corky and Harvest The Wind also come off races at Los Alamitos.

Jeffrey Sandberg’s Ocean Runner (Ocean Runaway-AB What A Runner by Royal Quick Dash), who was claimed for $5,000 in May at Les Bois Park, won the Zoetis Les Bois Park Starter Allowance Challenge and then was a troubled eighth in the Schvaneveldt for trainer Travis Lusk.

Craig Giles Racing LLC’s Whos On First AJ (Separatist-Marys Request by Arrows Request) won four straight races before finishing fourth in the Schvaneveldt. His wins included being claimed for $5,000 and then taking the Zoetis Emerald Downs Starter Allowance Challenge. The 9-year-old gelding has won 13 of 34 starts and is trained by Nick Cronquist.

Luis Nunez’s Runaway Corky (Ocean Runaway-Phoebe Ryon by Bills Ryon) took the Zoetis Grand Prairie Starter Allowance Challenge and then traveled to Los Alamitos to finish third in a conditioned allowance race as the odds-on favorite in his first start for trainer Jose De La Torre.

Ranch El Cabresto Inc.’s Harvest The Wind (Jumpn-Mirthy by Pritzi Dash) tries to break a string of three runner-up finishes. The Juan Aleman-trained mare was second to Gallant Mystic in the Zoetis Los Alamitos Starter Allowance Challenge, her most recent effort.
