Futurity and Derby Highlight Arapahoe Closing Weekend

Margo Schares’ homebred Midori N Smoke looks for her second futurity win in the $130,000 Mile High Futurity (G3) on Sunday and Junior’s Quarter Horses Inc.’s fastest-qualifier Carters Playmate racing in the $70,000 Mile High Derby on Saturday highlight closing weekend at Arapahoe Park.
    
Trainer John Hammes placed five horses in the Mile High Futurity, headed by Midori N Smoke and Lil Ms Money Bags. He will also be represented by Hardhitting Sawyer, Ikanshzoom and Shroom.
    
Midori N Smoke (Special Leader-Smokin Corona by Corona Cartel) is undefeated from three starts at Arapahoe Park and scored a game head win in the Cherry Creek Futurity (G3). She took the 330-yard Cherry Creek Futurity over Colorado-breds with a :16.96 time as the 6-5 favorite.
    
The John Hammes-trained miss won the second of five Mile High Futurity trials by one-half length as the 3-5 favorite. Her time of :19.515 was the quickest mark.
    
Lil Ms Money Bags (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Bits Of Bliss by Streakin La Jolla) was second to Midori N Smoke and recorded the second-fastest time of :19.609. She won her maiden at Arapahoe Park back in June and qualified for the Rocky Mountain Futurity. She is owned by Lisa Beauprez, Tom Bradbury and Tom Bradbury Jr.
    
The lightly raced Carters Playmate (Carters Cartel-A Streakin Mate by Streakin La Jolla) comes into the Mile High Derby with a pair of wins and two second-place finishes from five starts. The Shae Cox-trained colt raced to his first win since taking his Rocky Mountain Futurity trial more than one year ago in his career debut.
    
Carters Playmate won his Mile High Derby trial by 1 length at 9-2 odds, with a :19.56 time for 400 yards.
    
Hammes has a shot at the futurity-derby double with derby second-fastest qualifier Fit For Glory (Ivory James-Ima Perry Girl by Mr Jess Perry), who has the same ownership as Lil Ms Money Bags. Fir For Glory raced to a third-place finish in the Golden State Juvenile and qualified for the Oklahoma Futurity (G2), Rocky Mountain Futurity and Rocky Mountain Derby.
