Trainer/owner Dean Frey dominated three trials for the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge on Sunday qualifying three of the eight finalists, including co-top qualifiers, after winning all three trial races.
The eight fastest qualifiers will return to the Alberta racetrack on Sunday, July 27, and vie for the winner's share of an $18,500-added purse. Also at stake is a starting spot in the $150,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) on October 18 at Prairie Meadows.
Shipping north from the West Coast, Jaymee Love broke her maiden in the second trial with a 1 ½ length win over Raging Wave to post the top qualifying time of :18.21. The Ivory James filly came into the race off a third-place finish for a $12,500 tag at Los Alamitos Race Course on June 6. Jose Rocha rode the homebred filly out of Love To Finish First, by Separatist.
Lookin For A Richman got her first win three starts for Frey in the final trial when she defeated Stella Wave by a nose. Her time of :18.21 tied her stablemate for the top qualifying spot. After finishing second for $6,250 at Los Alamitos in her first start, the Tac It Like a Man filly had an off-the-board performance on June 13 after being steadied at the start. Frey bred the filly from the This Snow Is Royal mare Ajewelindisguise. Andrew Wright had the riding call.
Frey kicked off the day with Gentlemens Daughter, a Separatist filly who was also breaking her maiden in her third start. The gray miss recorded the fourth-fastest time of :18.24. Ramiro Castillo had the riding assignment. Another Oklahoma homebred, Gentlemens Daughter is out of the First Down Dash mare Wild California Rose. In her two prior starts she finished fourth and fifth for a $12,500 tag at Los Alamitos.
