Feature Mr Who came into Sunday’s $105,480 Bank of America Sunland Championship Challenge (G2) at Sunland Park without a victory since he captured the 2013 edition of the race. But he had run well in his four losing starts since then, including a second in the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1) in December, and he ran well again on this occasion to earn his seventh career victory a return invitation to compete in the $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship (G1). The race will be the featured event during the Bank of America Challenge Championships this fall at Prairie Meadows.
With Alonso Rivera in the saddle for conditioner Jose Muela and owners Julieta Torres and Heysol Howlet, Feature Mr Who broke on top from the rail and was never headed before hitting the wire a length in front in a time of :20.765 for 440 yards with a 16 mph tailwind. The 5-year-old gelding by Feature Mr Jess, bred in Florida by Buddy and Patty Newsome, paid $6.40 to win as the favorite. Feature Mr Who now has a record of 21-7-4-3 with earnings of $279,167.
There was a deadheat for second with Darian Burt’s homebred Jesscuzican and Testing The Ice hitting the wire together. Jesscuzican, a Utah-bred stallion also by Feature Mr Jess, earned the first stakes-placing of his career with the runner-up finish. Rancho Los Dos Potrillos LLC’s Testing The Ice, an Arkansas-bred by Stoli, was competing in the ninth stakes of his career and hit the board for the fifth time.
