Dreamers Cartel Fastest to Merial Arapahoe

Dreamers Cartel is fastest qualifier to Merial Arapahoe Challenge.

July 5, 2012

Juniors Quarter Horses Inc.’s Dreamers Cartel has been on the board in each of her three lifetime starts at Arapahoe Park and looks for her first stakes win at the track near Denver when she starts in the $20,000-added Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

Dreamers Cartel (Corona Cartel-Dreams Can Fly by Strawfly Special) prevailed in a tight battle with Hugo Barron Sierra’s Corona For You (Corona For Me-My First Twist by First Down Dash) in the second of two trials with the mares setting the top-two qualifying marks.

The Chris Gandarilla-trained Dreamers Cartel got the nod, with a :19.678 time for 400 yards while Corona For You was credited with a :19.692 mark for trainer Jose Manuel Barron.

Dreamers Cartel was third in last year’s Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge and then broke her maiden at Sunland Park in December. She prepared for this year’s Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge trials with a second-place run in an Arapahoe Park conditioned allowance race.

Corona For You, who could gain favoritism, has earned $156,089 from 29 starts with success from the high-priced claiming to stakes divisions. She won last year’s Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge and then was second in the Arapahoe Express at 330 yards. Earlier this year, she won back-to-back races at Sunland Park, including a 330-yard allowance race in :16.002.

Tom Bradbury and John Hammes’ Fast Dash Tanisha (Heza Fast Dash-Tanisha by Bully Bullion) won the other trial by a length in :19.974 for the fifth-fastest qualifying mark. Last year, she raced to a fourth-place finish in the Altoona Derby (G3) for trainer Hammes.
