De La Torre Looks For Memorable Ed Burke

Trainer has three horses in Ed Burke Million Futurity.

Trainer Jose De La Torre could have a very memorable night when he sends out three qualifying trial winners, including the unbeaten first- and third-fastest qualifiers, in the $1,111,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos on Sunday night.

The 350-yard Ed Burke Million is the first of three $1 million futurities at Los Alamitos. It is followed by the Grade 1, $1 million-est. Golden State Million and the $2 million-est. Los Alamitos Two Million later this year. If any horse wins all three races, then that horse’s connections take the $1 million Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza.

The top De La Torre prospects in the Ed Burke are fastest-qualifier Turbulent Times (Furyofthewind-Streakin La Tac by Streakin La Jolla) and third-fastest qualifier Masherati B (Separatist-She Travels by Fishers Dash). He also saddles trial winner and ninth-fastest qualifier Fire Up Willie (Walk Thru Fire-Willie Swings by Willie Wanta Dash).

Jesus Avila and Jesus Cueva’s Turbulent Times is spotless from two starts and showing improvement. After winning maiden at first asking by a neck at 300 yards, he stepped up with a one-half length win in the third of 14 Ed Burke trials with the fastest-qualifying time of :17.405.

Ronnie Keller and Ron Brooks’ Unchangeable (Stel Corona-Hard Lining by Hawkish) was second in that trial with the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.487 for trainer Rafael Orozco. The gelding won his only other start, a Los Alamitos maiden race, by a length.

San Gregorio Racing Stables’ Masherati B is two-for-two with a maiden win and his Ed Burke trial victory, each by one-half length. The gelding turned in a :17.565 time in his trial.

Jose and Gustavo De La Torre’s Fire Up Willie came back from a horrid trip in her maiden race to win her Ed Burke trial by one-half length in :17.680.

Trainers Jaime Gomez and Paul Jones each have a pair of Ed Burke qualifiers.

Gomez, a three-time Ed Burke winner, has fourth-fastest qualifier Docs First Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Dutch Secret by Separatist) and fifth-fastest qualifier She Forgives (Foose-Forgive Him by Hawkinson).

Owned by Dutch Masters III and Gomez, Docs First Fire was sixth in the Kindergarten and then won his Ed Burke trial by three-quarters of a length.

Dutch Masters III’s She Forgives has stakes credentials with a second in the Kindergarten (G2) and then was awarded first place in her Ed Burke trial after a disqualification.

Jones, a two-time Ed Burke winner, conditions seventh-fastest qualifier Foose Is Loose (Foose-Shescheckinumout by Check Him Out) and eighth-fastest qualifier Composed Charisma (First Down Dash-Beduinos Rusty by Chicks Beduino).

Owned by Jones with Thompson Racing, Foose Is Loose was seventh in the Kindergarten and then second to Masherati B in their Ed Burke trial.

Pedro Santiago Leite’s Composed Charmisa raced to third-place finishes in two maiden races before winning her Ed Burke trial by one-half length.
