Close Finish in Firecracker Derby

Jetblack Gold Moment beats stablemate FDD Going Grand at Delta Downs.

July 6, 2013

The top six finishers in Saturday’s $139,885 Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs were separated only by noses, heads and necks, and it was Jetblack Gold Moment who came out on top at the wire. The Texas-bred filly by Jet Black Patriot rallied for the victory under jockey Danny Lavergne and stopped the timer at :19.359 for 400 yards. Kenneth Roberts Sr. trains the filly for breeder/owner Mercy Hinklin’s Horse Farm LLC, and they also teamed on runner-up FDD Going Grand.

Jetblack Gold Moment made her 3-year-old debut in the Firecracker trials, and she ran second with the second-fastest time. Her win in the final marked her first victory against stakes foes and fifth win of her career. She has banked $147,623 with a record of 9-5-2-0.

FDD Going Grand just missed beating his stablemate for the win. The FDD Dynasty colt won the Old South Derby earlier in the Delta meet and has hit the board in 10 of his 11 starts. Favored Ronnie James, winner of the Firecracker Futurity (G2) last year, closed to take third.
