Three trials were run on Saturday afternoon for the $35,000-added Adequan Sam Houston Derby Challenge. The final for the top 10 qualifiers will take place on Saturday, May 19, with the winner earning a berth in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows on October 27.
The first trial produced the fastest time as Charmin Chief Corona won her 400-yard trial impressively by 1 ½ lengths in :19.675 with James Flores aboard. This was the third consecutive win for the Chief Corona filly, owned and bred by Gary Kurz. Trained by Cindi Keeton, she won the $180,900 Sam Houston Derby (G3) on April 14. Making Deals finished second in :19.897 with the second-fastest time.
A Game Dame won the final trial in :20.005 to post the third-fastest clocking for owner T.I. Cattle Company. Guy Hopkins saddled the First N Kool filly out of Miss Game Tee, by Game Patriot. Ridden by Luis Ramirez, she was bred in Texas by Bob and Jerry Gaston.
