In a fitting victory, Malinche Cattle Co.’s Charal Kid, a 6-year-old gelding by Streakin La Jolla, captured the $20,000 Streakin La Jolla Stakes on Saturday afternoon at Louisiana Downs. Santos Carrizales piloted the Texas-bred for trainer Eusevio Huitron and stopped the timer at :19.820 for 400 yards over a fast track. He prevailed by three-parts of a length and paid $4.80 for a $2 win bet as the favorite.
This marked the 14th career win and 10th stakes victory for Charal Kid, who has now banked $346,860 in 39 trips to the post. His stakes victories include four graded events, including the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Derby and Grade 2 Sam Houston Derby. Charal Kid is one of 83 stakes winners sired by Streakin La Jolla, who retired with a perfect 8-for-8 record while spending most of his career at Delta Downs in Louisiana. The Streakin Six stallion, who died in 2009, has sired the earners of more than $24 million.
Felipe Barron’s Pass Tha Cash, who started for a $5,000 claiming price as recently as last October, finished second in his stakes debut. Awholeseparategame, who won last year’s Louisiana Champions Day Derby (RG2) for owner Dehart Farms, took third.
