Champ Day Winners Back in Jess Perry

Louisiana Champions Day winners return in Mr Jess Perry.

February 23, 2012

Louisiana Champions Day Classic (RG2) winner Louisiana Rangler and Louisiana Champions Day Derby (RG2) winner Awholeseparategame make their first starts since those December 10 stakes when they meet in the $50,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at 350 yards for state-breds on Saturday at Louisiana Downs.

Kim McKenzie’s Louisiana Rangler (Jess Louisiana Blue-Rangler Print by Rocket Wrangler) rides a three-race winning streak dating back to taking a non-winners-of-two allowance race over 550 yards at Delta Downs on July 2. The Jess Louisiana Blue-sired gelding then took a 440-yard optional claiming race after the disqualification of the first horse under the wire.

Louisiana Rangler made his stakes debut in the Louisiana Champions Day Classic and was totally overlooked at 34-1 odds. The member of the Louis Lee stable opened up an early lead in the quarter-mile stakes and then held on for the upset win.

Dehart Farms’ Awholeseparategame (Game Patriot-Separada be Separatist) was respected at 7-2 odds in the Louisiana Champions Day Derby and he came through with a length win in the 400-yard stakes. He came back from an eight-month layoff in November to finish second by a nose in an allowance race and finish second in a division of the Evangeline Derby before starting in the Louisiana Champions Day Derby.

Grant Farms and James Richardson’s Blue Rare Bear (One Rare Bug-Eye Shine Special by First To Shine) should be in sharp form for the Mr Jess Perry after an impressive allowance win at 250 yards. The Van Haywood-trained gelding pulled out to the length win for his first victory since a $20,000 optional-claiming race back in September.
