Bye Bye Eagle Eye Upsets Sunland Futurity

One Famous Eagle colt draws clear to daylight victory.

December 27, 2013

Despite having the eighth-fastest qualifying time and being overlooked at odds of 10-1 in the wagering, Gilberto Flores’ Bye Bye Eagle Eye crushed the field in Friday’s $140,583 Sunland Park Winter Futurity (G2) by 2 ¼ lengths. Piloted by L. Salvador Martinez and trained by Mike Joiner, the colt by One Famous Eagle dashed 400 yards in :19.229 to earn his first stakes victory.

Bred in Texas by J Bar 7 Ranch LLC, Bye Bye Eagle Eye qualified to the Dash For Cash Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park in October and finished a close fifth. Following that effort he shipped to California and finished fifth in a trial to the Golden State Million Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos before making his Sunland Park debut with a third-place run in his trial. This victory marked his third win in eight career starts and improved his bankroll to $99,109.

Fastest qualifier Rae Of Fire and Famous Edge Of Glory finished in a dead heat for second. Rae Of Fire, a Walk Thru Fire filly owned by Adelardo Gallegos, nearly doubled her career earnings with a check for $20,384. Richard Ford’s Famous Edge Of Glory, also by One Famous Eagle, has his two-race win streak snapped with the runner-up finish.
