July 27, 2013

Douglas Traylor’s Bubba Carver recorded his third straight and richest victory of the Retama Park meet as he captured Saturday’s $193,600 Retama Park Derby (G3). The fastest qualifier and 8-5 favorite, Bubba Carver took an early lead from post 2 and held on to win by a nose in :19.851 for 400 yards. Francisco Calderon rode the Texas-bred Wave Carver gelding for trainer Judd Kearl.

Bred by Bob and Jerry Gaston out of the Fredricksburg mare Rustys Lil Lady, Bubba Carver has now won six of 11 starts with earnings of $124,345. The gelding ended his 2-year-old campaign with a stakes win at Hialeah Park and has now posted a perfect record in three starts this year at Retama. He captured the Ben E. Keith Stakes (R) against Texas-breds going 330 yards on June 22 and then rolled to a 1 ¾-length win in his Retama Derby trial.

Longshot Paint Candy Flying, a PYC Paint Your Wagon gelding who was claimed earlier in the year for $15,000 by Elite Oilfield Services, finished a game second and earned $32,912 for his effort. Javier Ramirez’s Dash For Coronas, winner of last year’s Oklahoma Futurity (G2), closed fast to get third.
