Billingham, Midway Monster Take Sun Downs Challenge Races

Washington track held two Challenge events on Saturday.

Washington’s Sun Downs featured a pair of Bank of America Racing Challenge events on Saturday. Billingham broke in and bumped at the start but recovered nicely to roll to a 1½-length win in the $15,030 Zoetis Sun Downs Starter Allowance Challenge.

Billingham not only picked up the $7,214 winner's purse but guaranteed himself a starting spot in the $75,000 Zoetis Starter Allowance Challenge Championship on October 18 at Prairie Meadows.

Jockey Jose Guerrero rode the Check Him Out 6-year-old over the 350 yards in a quick :17.79, a 95 speed index. It was the sixth career win in 19 starts for the Pedro Sanguino-owned gelding. Juan Sanguino trains with California-bred out of My Ladys Eyes, by Mr Eye Opener. Zory Kuzyk is the breeder.

RF Pistol Pete, a 6-year-old Desirio gelding owned by Ramiro Cancino, finished second to earn $3,081. Also trained by Juan Sanguino, the gelding out of Special Dream Baby, by Special Effort, was ridden by Tad Skaggs. Marvin and Pam Wilcox are the breeders.

Baldemar Rodriguez' Sollovino finished a neck back in third for trainer Saul Rodriguez. Pablo Madrigal rode the Fastnfierce 4-year-old. Adran Roberts bred Sollovino in Oregon from the Red Hot Rhythm mare Red Hot Diva. He earned $1,503.

Completing the Zoetis field were Eyes Movin, Ought To Azoom, Eyez On Brimmer, NCC Shakool and FM Sweet Corona.

In his 10th career start, Midway Monster went wire-to-wire to win the $17,112 Sun Downs Maiden Challenge. Miss Kitty Zoom finished a neck off the winner and 1 ¼ lengths in front of CM Undertainfluence.

Ridden by Tad Skaggs, Midway Monster completed the 350 yards in :18.20 to pocket the winner's purse of $7,872. Juan Sanguino conditions the Jet Black Patriot 3-year-old for owner Ramiro Cancino. J. Garvin Kelly and Nancy Yearsley bred Midway Monster in Oklahoma from the Royal Quick Dash mare Dream Mirage.

Midway Monster finished second in the trials and posted the second-fastest time after traveling to the Pacific Northwest. Previously he raced at Los Alamitos Race Course and Remington Park.

Barbara Davis' Miss Kitty Zoom earned $3,422 for her second-place effort. Bill Hoburg saddled the Shazoom filly out of Kitty Cheng, by Beda Cheng. Ruben Camaco was up. Earl and Lucille Pepper bred the bay filly in Idaho.

Breaking her maiden in the April 19 trials, CM Undertainfluence picked up $1,712 for finishing third. Nick Lowe conditions the Dash Ta Fame filly for owner/breeder Randy Dickerson. Troy Still had the riding call.

Fastest qualifier Hyho Travio was fourth, followed by Wings Like Eagles, JS Mr Jazz, Rock de Noche, Hittin The Mark and El Ehicharito.
