Big Dashing Perry Scorches Firecracker

Fastest qualifier lights up Delta's Firecracker Futurity.

July 5, 2013

Big Dashing Perry came into Saturday’s night’s $265,775 Firecracker Futurity (G2) undefeated and as the fastest qualifier for the event. When the dust settled his record was still unblemished and he was the new 350-yard track record holder at Delta Downs, winning the richest open-bred stakes race of the season in a blazing time of :17.082 over a fast track, which earned him a speed index of 105.

Under jockey David Alvarez, Big Dashing Perry broke fifth in a field of 10 before he gained momentum and started to pull away. At the finished line he was three quarters of a length better than Emilianos Wagon, while the 2.10-1 race favorite Itea wound up another nose back in third.

After the race jockey Alfonso Lujan, who finished seventh aboard Bay Ba Licious, lodged a claim of foul against Emilianos Wagon for interference in mid-stretch and the stewards upheld the objection. That action moved Itea up to the place spot and BBs First Flame into third. BBs First Flame originally finished a length behind Itea before he was awarded the higher placing.

Big Dashing Perry is owned by Grant Farms LLC, Tommy Hays and Bobby Barnett. He is conditioned by Bobby Martinez. The bay gelding by Mr Jess Perry, out of the Dashin Bye mare Marcys Dashin Bye, was bred in Louisiana by Grant Farms LLC.

Big Dashing Perry earned $132,887 for his victory, which raised his lifetime bankroll up to $144,587.

Sent to the post at odds of 2.9-1, Big Dashing Perry paid $7.80 to win, $3.40 to place and $3.20 to show. Itea returned $3.80 to place and $2.80 to show. Bbs First Flame was worth $13.80 to show.

Racing resumes at Delta Downs on Friday with another 10-race program that begins at 6:45 p.m. The featured race on the card is the $20,000 Par-A-Dice Stakes for older horses competing at 300 yards.
