Rescheduled card will include Grade 1 Zia Park Championship.

November 24, 2013

Zia Park

While an unseasonal snowfall has made the Land of Enchantment a little more enchanting, it also means that Zia Park Racetrack & Casino will wait a few extra days to conduct its inaugural Land of Enchantment Day stakes races and the Quarter Horse championship stakes that were postponed because of cold winter weather in Hobbs, New Mexico, this weekend. Zia Park will hold seven stakes races worth a total of more than $1.1 million on a special Thanksgiving Eve race card on Wednesday. HRTV will provide television coverage, and HRRN will feature radio coverage.

After Zia Park concludes its seven stakes races, its sister racetrack, Penn National, will hold four stakes races as part of its Thanksgiving Eve Racing Festival. Many of Wednesday’s Thoroughbred stakes races from Zia Park and Penn National will be part of the Penn Gaming Racing Challenge that will be launched by parent company Penn National Gaming, Inc. in 2014.

For Quarter Horses, the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Quarter Horse Championship (G1) will for the first time give the winner a berth to next month’s $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) at Los Alamitos Race Course, the richest race for older Quarter Horses in the United States. Call Me a Blazn Chic will try to repeat in the 400-yard, $140,000 New Mexico Quarter Horse Fillies and Mares Championship (RG1).

For Zia Park’s rescheduled Thoroughbred stakes races, the inaugural running of the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles brings together a field from around the country for the most valuable stakes race for female horses ever contested in New Mexico. Multiple graded stakes winner Broadway Empire competes in the $200,000 Zia Park Derby for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. Ol Winedrinker Who, the first New Mexico-based horse to win the Zia Park Derby in 2012, will try to make more Zia history in the $150,000 Zia Park Distance Championship for older horses at 1 1/8 miles. There will be a battle of the sexes between New Mexico Cup winners That’s the Idea and Reaper in the $140,000 Eddy County Stakes for 2-year-olds bred in New Mexico at 1 mile. Winter Book will try to defend home field against shippers in the $55,000 Zia Park Distaff for fillies and mares at 6 furlongs.
