Zia Park Opens September 8

New Mexico track opens Saturday.

Press Release
September 5, 2012

Zia Park will conduct a 54-day mixed meet of Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds in Hobbs, New Mexico, from September 8 to December 4 with racing on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

The meet is highlighted on October 28 by New Mexico Cup Day, one of the richest cards for state-breds in the nation with purses totaling approximately $2 million for 11 stakes races.  The track will also hold one of the year’s final major derby races, the $150,000 Zia Park Derby on December 1.

Zia Park will conduct more than 30 stakes races this year for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. For Quarter Horses, the major races will be the Grade 2 Hobbs America Futurity and Derby on October 7, the Southwest Juvenile Championship (G1) on November 25, and the Zia Park Quarter Horse Championship (G1) on December 2.

There will be a new horse race announcer at Zia Park this season. Jonathan Horowitz, 27, began announcing when he was 14 and became the youngest person ever to call a horse race in the United States at California’s Los Alamitos Race Course in 1999.  In addition to announcing at Zia Park, Horowitz will write articles for the racetrack’s program and conduct handicapping classes.
