Ruidoso to Feature Ostrich and Camel Racing

Special races set to kick off All American weekend.

The ultimate weekend of the Ruidoso Downs summer season, with the two largest purses in American Quarter Horse racing history, starts on Friday afternoon with feathers and humps.

On Friday afternoon, Ruidoso Downs will offer camel and ostrich races for the first time. Yes, these creatures are even ridden by jockeys.

The Labor Day weekend is highlighted by the Grade 1, $2.8 million All American Derby on Sunday and the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity on Monday.

“The All American weekend is all about the finest Quarter Horses racing for the largest purses and fun. The camel and ostrich races are guaranteed fun for the entire family,” said Ruidoso Downs Marketing Director Eric Alvarez.

First post time on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is noon. First post time on Monday is 12:30 p.m.

Also on Friday, author Chris Kotulak will be signing copies of his biography of Thoroughbred hall of fame trainer Jack Van Berg entitled “JACK From Grit To Glory”.
