Ruidoso Handle Up 11 Percent

Track shows double digit increase, not impacted by nearby fire.

Ruidoso Downs is off to an excellent start for the racing season with the wagering handle up 11 percent through the first 12 racing days when compared to last year.

A breakdown shows a 6 percent increase in on-track wagering, a 34 percent increase in out-of-state wagering and wagering in-state even with last year.

The Little Bear Fire has destroyed more than 200 homes, but has not impacted racing at Ruidoso Downs. No horses have been evacuated and there has been no damage within 15 miles of the track. The fire is north and northwest of Ruidoso Downs and the more than 1,000 firefighters fighting the fire have done a commendable job reducing the fire over the past few days.

There are also no road issues impacting Ruidoso Downs. The major highway passing the track, Highway 70, has been open and remains open. There is no threat to reduce access to Ruidoso Downs.

The weather forecast is for highs in the 80s with a 30 percent chance of precipitation on Saturday.
