At its June meeting, the New Mexico Racing Commission approved 2014 race dates for all five of the state's racinos.

In 2014, race days for Sunland Park will remain at 76 days, the same as in recent years. Zia Park will remain at 56 days, Ruidoso Downs will again run 60 days in 2014 and The Downs at Albuquerque will run a 37-day meet, three fewer days than this year. The Downs also will run the traditional 17-day State Fair meet.

Track management and the New Mexico Horsemen’s Association had reached an agreement on the race dates for four of the five tracks, but the Racing Commission had to determine the race dates for SunRay Park in Farmington after officials of that track and the horsemen could not reach an agreement.

The Commission voted to have SunRay run 39 live race days in 2014, the same amount as the past two years. SunRay officials wanted to reduce the number of days to 32, and the New Mexico Horsemen’s Association had proposed a 47-day meet.

SunRay officials say the track’s revenues from its casino have been dramatically reduced by competition from a Navajo tribal casino that opened last year on the western edge of Farmington. The track told commission members they have lost a quarter of a million dollars in April and between $100,000 and $150,000 last month.
