Racing figures rise in May.

American Quarter Horse racing figures during May saw increases over 2011. Leading the charge was the number of races, which saw a 3.9 percent increase to 906 races.
Also increasing were purses and added money, rising to $13,388,798 and $11,185,022, respectively. Pari-mutuel handle dipped slightly to $30,234,697.
The year-to-date figures show gains in almost all major categories, including a 3.1 percent increase in races, and a nearly 2 percent gain in purses. Average earnings per starter increased 1.6 percent. Added money is up 1.5 percent for the year, with pari-mutuel handle almost steady, with only an 8/10ths of a percent change from last year.
Bank of America Racing Challenge nominations are also up 16 percent, with 237 nominations to date. The Bank of America Racing Challenge is dedicated to providing more racing opportunities for the racing American Quarter Horse. A horse’s enrollment in the program is good for the horse’s lifetime.
These numbers reflect races processed in the AQHA database by May 31.
