Los Alamitos

The excitement of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale on October 6 and 7 and the outstanding racing action surround it has turned this weekend into one of the marquee weekends of the year in the Quarter Horse racing industry.

In addition to the two-day sale, which this year will feature nearly 500 hips of Quarter Horse yearlings and broodmares, the weekend at Los Alamitos Race Course also features the runnings of the PCQHRA Breeders Derby (G3), Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap and Kip Didericksen Overnight Handicaps on Friday, October 5; the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity (G2) on Saturday, October 6; and the trials to the Wild West Futurity on Sunday, October 7.

The Blane Schvaneveldt, Kip Didericksen and Wild West stakes are three popular events that provide restricted racing opportunities for Quarter Horses based in the Intermountain and Northwest regions of the country. In an effort to build on the success of these races, Los Alamitos Race Course has expanded its stakes scheduled for these horses in 2012.

Quarter Horses ages 3 and upward shipping in from the Intermountain and Northwest regions will have the opportunity to aim for two new restricted stakes races. The first will be a $16,000 overnight stakes at 350 yards to be held on Sunday, September 16. This date is 19 days prior to the runnings of the Blane Schvaneveldt and Kip Didericksen and will serve as a perfect preparatory race for these two stakes races. The second new event for these sprinters will be a $16,000 overnight stakes at 400 yards to be held on Saturday, October 27, which is 22 days after the runnings of the Blane Schvaneveldt and Kip Didericksen.

Quarter Horses are eligible to run if they have made at least two starts in the Northwest and/or Intermountain states of Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming since January 1, 2012. Horses racing or based at Los Alamitos in 2012 that travel to the Northwest and Intermountain regions to race will not be eligible to compete in the Blane Schvaneveldt, Kip Didericksen or Wild West Futurity.

Los Alamitos will also host two new restricted stakes races for 2-year-olds from the Intermountain and Northwest regions. Both of these stakes will be held at 350 yards. The first will be a $15,000 overnight stakes to be held on Sunday, September 16, which is 19 days prior to the Wild West Futurity trials that will be held on Sunday, October 7. The finals for the Wild West Futurity are set for Saturday, October 20 with the second $15,000 overnight stakes to follow 21 days later on Saturday, November 10. In theory, a 2-year-old from the Intermountain and Northwest region has the opportunity to race four times in a total of three stakes race against restricted competition at Los Alamitos Race Course. These additional races would be run with the same existing restrictions mentioned above for the Schvaneveldt, Kip Didericksen and Wild West Futurity.
