Trainer Jaime Gomez recalled his first training win ever with a Quarter Horse earlier this week.

“It came with Gavilan Canyon in1992,” he said. “The funny thing about that win is that I did not actually saddle the horse. The horse was saddled by my assistant trainer because I was taking care of some other business with one of my owners at the time. I’ll never forget that part of it when the horse went out and won the race.”

Gomez won’t forget the circumstances of his 1,000th Quarter Horse victory either.

Just like for his first win, Gomez did not saddle Separate Card before the gray gelding gave the trainer his milestone victory with Carlos Huerta in the irons on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

“Leave it to Jaime to miss this,” said owner Mike Abraham, one of the trainer’s long time clients, with a smile. “Jaime was celebrating his daughter Veronica’s birthday today, but he was hoping to be back in time for this race. I was happy to represent him in the winner’s circle for this win.”

Gomez had joked that maybe it would be good luck if he didn’t saddle his 1,000th winner, just like when he saddled his first. The outstanding trainer will definitely be in the saddling paddock next Sunday night, as he’ll be preparing Senor Toby for the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship. Senor Toby, who has won seven straight races, will be facing champions Jess You And I and Noconi plus 2011 Champion of Champions runner-up Sparky E Boy in the biggest race so far this year. The winner will earn a berth to this year’s Champion of Champions.

Gomez is the seventh trainer with 1,000 Quarter Horse wins at the Orange County oval. His major wins over the years have included the 1996 Los Alamitos Million Futurity with the great Corona Cartel and the Ed Burke Million Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity with Higher Fire in 2005 and the 2006 Golden State Million Futurity with the all-time great Jess You And I. His other major futurity winners include champions Carters Cartel and Secret Card, plus the likes of Make It Anywhere, Sassy Smith, Tac It Like A Man, Chicks Like Us just to mention a few. By the way, his milestone winner Separate Card is out of the talented mare Secret Card.
