Gate workouts for 2-year-old Quarter Horses kicked off on Tuesday morning at Los Alamitos with six babies making their first official drills at the Orange County oval. EG High Desert Farms unveiled four 2-year-olds on Tuesday, all conditioned by former Northern California leading rider Victor Miranda.
The EG High Desert Farm contingent was headed by a trio of Corona Czech babies including the colt Fire Czech, who drilled 220 in :12.80. Bred by EG High Desert Farm, Fire Czech is a half brother of Sixish, the winner of the $500,000 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G1) in 2008. Also bred by EG High Desert, Sixish finished second in that year’s Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) and Kindergarten Futurity (G1) and was a multiple derby finalist in 2009. Fire Czech and Sixish are both out of the Sixarun mare Sixarunner, who is a graded stakes winner of $151,635. Fire Czech is eligible to run in the Kindergarten Futurity trials to be held at Los Alamitos on Sunday, May 6.
Owned by Laura Burger, Giambi Stables LLC and Bernie Selmanson, Kalypso Kid posted the morning’s bullet work of :12.30. Trained by Cody Joiner, the Separatist colt was purchased for $17,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale and is the first foal out of Jess Cartel, a lightly raced horse from the family of All American Futurity (G1) finalist Jess Satin.
“He had shown some ability so I thought that he would work in the :12.50 range, but I’m not too surprised that he went :12.30,” Joiner said. “He has a natural gait from the gate and the track was in excellent condition on Tuesday morning. We had some rain on Monday, but the track wasn’t terribly wet and overall I thought it was in great shape. We trained his mother as well. My dad started her in New Mexico and she ran here as well. We liked her a lot, but she was a little too heavy at the top and didn’t pan out as a racehorse. We always thought she would be a good broodmare and this is her first foal.”
Joiner has a nice plan laid out for Kalypso Kid.
“He’s in the Kindergarten trials,” he said. “We’ll give him three weeks to be exact and then he’ll have his second workout. We’ll definitely give him an out in April before the trials in May. I think I have a good group of 2-year-olds this year. I’ll have two more sets to work on Saturday and after that we’ll be flooding the gates with 2-year-olds.”
Los Alamitos Race Course will once again offer video of 2-year-old workouts held at the Orange County oval. Video access is absolutely FREE and can be viewed by using Windows Media Player at the following link: http://www.losalamitos.com/Workouts.aspx.
