Los Alamitos

World Champion Cold Cash 123 will start from post number eight when an outstanding field of 10 Quarter Horses will compete in the Grade 1 $750,000 Champion of Champions on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Post eight was great for Cold Cash 123 in his Los Alamitos debut back on September 23 when the son of Oak Tree Special won the Go Man Go Handicap by a half length. Cold Cash 123 acquired post eight for the Champion of Champions during the post position selection show held in the Finish Line at the Orange County oval on Wednesday. The connections of the horses in the Champion of Champions and Sunday’s Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity had the opportunity to pick their post position based on a random order. The connections of Refrigerator Handicap winner Charal Kid were the first to select their post position in the Champion of Champions and trainer Shae Cox went for the inside rail and the number one post position. Charal Kid, a winner of 18 races in his career, finished second in both of his previous starts from post one in 2012.

Los Alamitos Super Derby winner Deniro had the second choice and trainer Jose De La Torre went for post number nine while trainer Paul Jones took post number 10 for Bank of America Challenge Championship winner Rylees Boy with the 10th selection. Cold Cash 123, meanwhile, had the seventh choice in the draw and trainer Denny Ekins started thinking about post number eight.

“I don’t think I took a breath for about five minutes as each pick was made,” Ekins said. “I was thinking of post number eight. When our turn came and the eight spot was open I was thrilled. It took me about a second to figure that that would be a great spot for Cold Cash 123. I spoke to owners (Walter and Carolyn Bay) and they were happy with post eight and I spoke to Sleepy Gilbreath, who trained Cold Cash 123 earlier this year, and he was also happy with the eighth post. It is going to be a great race with a tremendous group of runners.”

One of those great runners is Javier Molina’s El Aguila Real, a two-time Grade 1 winner in 2012 with victories in the Vessels Maturity and Los Alamitos Winter Championship. With the fourth choice in the selection show, assistant trainer Jose Benavides selected post number five for El Aguila Real.

“Number five was open, number four was open and he’s won Grade 1 races from both of those spots this year,” Benavides said. “The number five hole is one of the last posts that is loaded in the starting gate so that’s why we went with the number five post. El Aguila Real will be one of the last horses to enter the starting gate. He’s usually ready to run when they load him in the gate so I don’t want him waiting long in the gate. We talked it over with jockey Eduardo Nicasio and he also liked post number five. This horse is doing great and he’s coming off of a very solid race in the (Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship).”

Francisco Vallejo will saddle El Aguila Real.

Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trial winner Hez Our Secret and runner-up Senor Toby selected fifth and sixth. Johnny Trotter’s Hez Our Secret nabbed post number four, the same spot from where he won the Z. Wayne Griffin, while Senor Toby took post seven. Owned by Brad Lohr and Daniel Reynoso, Senor Toby won his trial to the Los Alamitos Winter Championship earlier this season.

Double Bar S Ranch’s five-time Champion of Champions finalist Jess You And I will start from post number three for trainer Paul Jones.

“I think we did pretty good with the post positions for Rylees Boy and Jess You And I,” Jones said.

Jess You And I, the richest horse in the field with $1,824,739, was an allowance winner from post three at Los Alamitos on August 2011. Owned by Robert Williams and trained by Elena Andrade, Flame N Flash settled for post number two after drawing the 10th and final selection. Flame N Flash has never raced from this post position in her 14-race career.
