Jan Mapes’ love for the horses and the outdoors filled early sketchbooks and drew her to study earth science in college. Although a classroom couldn’t hold her for long, her inquisitive mind continues to investigate the world, fueling her with wonder and insight into the land and its creatures, adding feel and depth to her work.
Whether it’s a bronze sculpture, oil painting, watercolor or a sketch, Jan strives to capture the emotion of the moment—the life and gesture of her subject in a way that invites the viewer into the story she’s telling.
“God gave me the gift of noticing His beautiful creation and expressing the wonder visually. I want to convey something in my life that comes through in the story of a piece—something I’ve observed or I think is interesting. My work will never be done, for this isn’t really work, but a journey of exploration.”
