The 2012 Battle in the Saddle will feature $10,000 added for Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association entries and points for AQHA entries.

Rules

  • To compete in the Battle in the Saddle’s cowboy mounted shooting classes, all riders and horse owners must be current, card-holding members in good standing with AQHA and the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association. Memberships in AQHA and CMSA can be purchased at the time of entry or at the show.
  • A current copy of the horse’s registration paper will be required at time of check-in to verify current ownership.
  • This will be a three stage sanctioned CMSA United States Championship and AQHA point event on July 5. It will be a two stage event if more than 60 contestants enter. There will be a two stage lever action rifle event to follow.
  • At the end of the event on July 5, all AQHA and CMSA points and class paybacks will be tabulated. The top-10 men and top-10 ladies in each division in the revolver will come back for a one stage run off for a total $9,000 in added money in the Friday night Battle in the Saddle finals. The top 10 in the rifle will come back Friday night to run for $1,000 in added money in the finals.
  • All payback money stays in the AQHA class entered. Payback is 50 percent of the entry and pays to three places. All payback money in CMSA stays in the division and payback is 50 percent. CMSA pays to three places.  Both AQHA and CMSA is paid back gender split.
  • All rifle payback money stays in class at 50 percent of entry and pays back three places.
  • Friday night revolver added money pays back divisional/gender split three places:
    • Limited 1 & 2: 20 percent
    • Express 3 & 4: 30 percent
    • Masters 5 & 6: 50 percent
    • Three place gender split pays out:
      • First: 50 percent
      • Second: 30 percent
      • Third: 20 percent
  • Friday Night rifle added money pays back three places:
    • First: 50 percent
    • Second: 30 percent
    • Third: 20 percent
  • Estimated start time for Battle in the Saddle Finals on Friday night is 7:00 pm.
  • All stages will be drawn and posted within a 24-hour of start time.
  • All CMSA rules apply.
  • Health papers and negative Coggins (1 year) required at barn check
  • May enter up to three horses in AQHA portion and one in CMSA.
  • The following AQHA classes will be offered:
    • Open: This division is open for anyone to show in. This will be the division comparable to CMSA levels 5 and 6 – this applies to all AQHA/CMSA events. In addition to the CMSA level 5 and 6 competitors, the open division is where all professional who earn remuneration for training, clinics, etc. would show, regardless of CMSA classification.
    • Amateur: All rules and regulations set by AQHA for amateur eligibility apply. Amateur status for CMSA contestants would be open to levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 unless rules or regulations of amateur status are not met.
    • Select amateur: All rules and regulations set by AQHA for Select amateur eligibility will apply. At the age of 50, an exhibitor in good standing with AQHA and CMSA may chose to show in the Select amateur division. This would be the senior levels 1 through 6 in CMSA meeting the required rules and regulations of the Select amateur status.
    • Youth: All rules and regulations set by AQHA for youth eligibility will apply. Due to the nature of the sport of cowboy mounted shooting, the youth division for AQHA/CMSA will be open to competitors ages 12-19. Once turning 19-years-old, exhibitors will no longer be eligible to compete in the youth division.

  • All CMSA points will apply toward qualification to CMSA World Championship in Amarillo on October 16 -20, 2012. Battle in the Saddle is a CMSA United States Championship and will be worth "six times the points."
  • All AQHA points will qualify for the 2013 AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championship Show, to be held March 2013.

  • CMSA Horses will be allowed on show grounds beginning July 4 and move out will be July 7 (three-day stay).
